Zines -- small circulation, non-commercial publications that often cover political, social and cultural issues from a significantly different angle from the mainstream media. J. Scott Burgeson, Korea's No 1 expat "zinester" and a resident of Korea since 1996, treats fans of the genre to "Korea Bug," a collection of Burgeson's irreverent observations of both Korean and expat culture as they appeared in his popular zine, "Bug." From interviews with Korea's last gisaeng to a look at, well, "incredibly strange books about Korea written by honkies," the writer goes where angels -- or at least other pasty-faced Westerners -- fear to tread in his quest to reveal the truth at the heart of Korea and its contemporary culture. As the jacket of the book points out: "This is neither uninformed, naval-gazing blogosphere chatter now shallow, rah-rah propaganda for Korea, Inc., but rather rigorous cultural criticism with a bracing, adrenaline-charged punk spirit." The collection -- much of which dates from the late 1990s -- keeps to this spirit with a vengeance. While some of the material may be somewhat dated (only natural, given Korea's dynamic nature), most of the book's observations still hold true. His various interviews with resident expats and his cutting observations of expat life in general should be required reading for any foreigner living in the Land of the Morning Calm. Not for the weak of heart, Burgeson's offbeat and at times colorful language and the frank nature of much of his commentary could come as a shock to those who prefer their news and information about Korea filtered through the mainstream media. Those wanting a more up-front, no-holds-barred look at Korea, however, would be well advised to pick up a copy "Korea Bug."
